Blurred lines and controversial decisions mean that going to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) can be a risky proposition.

Registered tax agents should think carefully before representing a client on a tax dispute at the AAT, as the tribunal’s procedures and rules of evidence may be outside of their area of competence.

It is entirely legal for accountants to appear for a client at the AAT but the fact that they can does not automatically mean that they should.
